Limbu Letter Kha

3/68

Bare ᤂ sounds roughly like a k released with a puff of air, followed by an open, rounded vowel; it is not the full “kha” syllable. In Limbu spelling, adding the a-vowel sign makes “kha” (ᤂᤠ). The script’s history runs from manuscript and ritual writing to modern Limbu publishing.

What ᤂ means

Bare ᤂ sounds like an aspirated k plus a rounded open vowel.

The k is released with a puff of air, followed by an open, rounded vowel, roughly the vowel in “law” for many English speakers. Add Limbu’s a-vowel sign to get the syllable “kha”: ᤂᤠ. “Kha” names the consonant; the bare letter does not contain that a vowel.

Why does the Limbu script matter?

It gives Limbu language and ritual knowledge a written form.

Traditional accounts place Sirijanga in the ninth century. A catalog lists a Limbu alphabet book from the early eighteenth century, and the Unicode history cites writings collected in the 1850s. Together, these trace a long record of Limbu writing.

The alphabet book connects writing with Buddhist religious life. Revival work developed in Kalimpong beginning in 1925. After 1990, ritual books and literature strengthened the script’s role as an ethnic marker as well as a writing system. Limbu belongs to the Brahmic family of scripts, a broad family used across South and Southeast Asia, and was probably modeled on the Lepcha script; Lepcha writing has historical ties to Tibetan writing.

Why does this character sometimes look wrong?

A font or encoding mismatch is usually the cause.

A missing glyph or misplaced vowel sign points to a font or shaping problem. OpenType support matters for Limbu combining forms, and older 8-bit Limbu fonts use a different encoding from Unicode.

Use a Unicode Limbu layout. Text from a legacy font may need conversion before it works as portable Unicode.

In writing, ᤂ marks a Limbu letter; its wider meaning comes from the word and passage around it.

Bare ᤂ is not the syllable “kha”: its built-in vowel is open and rounded, not a.

Questions people ask

1

Why does a legacy Limbu font show the wrong character?

It may use a custom 8-bit encoding rather than Unicode. Use the matching font to display that data, or convert it to Unicode for exchange.
