Limbu Small Letter Anusvara

46/68

In Limbu writing, ᤲ marks nasalization at a syllable's end: the sound resonates through the nose. As of 2026, orthography guidance describes it as a less common option for a final nasal, alongside ᤱ. Limbu tradition and documentary scholarship tell different stories about the script's origin.

What ᤲ means

It marks a nasal quality at the end of a Limbu syllable.

Place it after the syllable it modifies. In Limbu writing it works as a combining final mark, so it belongs with the letters before it rather than standing alone.

Where did the Limbu script come from?

Limbu tradition and documentary scholarship tell different origin stories. A traditional Limbu account says Srijanga recovered an ancient script after it was lost. Documentary scholarship instead traces the script's emergence to the eighteenth century and associates its development with Srijanga. A British Library catalogue dates a Limbu alphabet and Mundhum (Limbu sacred oral tradition) manuscript collection to 1842–1846.

The script gave Limbu people a way to write their oral tradition. Accounts describe it as influenced by the Lepcha script and as partly resembling Tibetan writing. Its revival spread in the 1920s, and publications helped make Sirijanga writing a cultural marker as well as a way to record Limbu.

Why does ᤲ look like a dot?

It is a small combining mark, attached by the font.

Its attachment and spacing depend on font rendering. If it floats or shifts, check the character order and whether the font supports Limbu combining marks.

Specialist and language-specific: this mark belongs to Limbu orthography.

Why does ᤲ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
