Limbu Subjoined Letter Ra

42/68

Text symbol

What ᤪ means

It adds an r sound after a base consonant.

In Limbu spelling, the subjoined ra sits at the lower right of a base consonant and makes a syllable-initial consonant cluster. Limbu has few such clusters; syllable-final r uses a different small letter, ᤷ. For example, ᤁᤪ places the medial ra after ka.

How did the Limbu script reach this form?

Revival and standardisation shaped its modern form.

A British Library catalogue describes an alphabet book associated with Sirijanga as dating to around 1730 or earlier. A Unicode proposal describes the oldest known collected Limbu writings as from the 1850s. Together, these records trace an early written tradition without settling on a single invention date.

Written Limbu gave oral and ritual knowledge, including mundhum (traditional oral narratives and ritual lore), a home in books. Development of the modern script began in Kalimpong in 1925, adding voiced consonants and changing letter shapes and functions. Limbu entered Sikkim public schools in 1968. After democracy returned to Nepal in the 1990s, new literature, especially religious books, strengthened the script’s role as an ethnic and literary marker. The standard places Limbu in the Brahmic family of scripts and models its subjoined medials on a Tibetan pattern; it also notes a connection with the Kirat Rai script. These are structural connections, not evidence that this particular letter is Tibetan or was borrowed from Tibetan.

Ordinary inside Limbu spelling; opaque outside it.

Do not read ᤪ as syllable-final r; that uses a different form.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ᤪ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
