What does ꓮ mean in Fraser Lisu?
It is the Lisu A vowel in Fraser writing. Fraser, also called Old Lisu, usually places an unwritten glottal stop—a brief closure in the throat—before a vowel that starts a syllable; tone letters follow the syllable.
The script took shape between 1908 and 1914, when Karen preacher Sara Ba Thaw adapted Latin letter shapes; James O. Fraser and Lisu pastors later revised it. A handwritten version is recorded in 1917. Works in Fraser writing include Bible and hymn books as well as primers, dictionaries, songbooks, textbooks, and newspapers.
In China's Lisu autonomous areas, Fraser writing became a government standard in 1983. A newer Latin-based, Pinyin-based orthography has also been especially associated with non-Christian use. A study published in 2023 describes efforts in Thailand to broaden Fraser's image beyond its Christian associations.
