What ꓢ means
It spells Lisu s, normally with an open “ah” vowel.
A consonant’s unwritten default vowel is called the inherent vowel; a following vowel letter replaces it.
Why does ꓢ look like Latin S?
Ba Thaw adapted Latin capital shapes to create the Fraser script.
Ba Thaw, a Karen evangelist from Myanmar, created it in 1908–1914. James Outram Fraser and Lisu pastors revised it for Christian teaching, Bible, and hymn publishing; Burmese writing influenced its tone marks.
Also called Old Lisu, it differs from New Lisu, a Latin-letter system devised in China in the 1950s.
