lisu letter xa

Lisu letter Xa

24/48

ꓧ is the Lisu xa letter for a rough sound made at the back of the mouth, written /x/ in pronunciation guides. In Fraser-alphabet Lisu, a consonant with no written vowel after it also carries an open “a” sound. Its Latin-like shape comes from the script’s adapted forms; it is a letter for Lisu writing, not a free-standing chat symbol.

Text symbol

What ꓧ means

It writes the rough Lisu consonant /x/.

The notation /x/ stands for a raspy sound made at the back of the mouth, like the “ch” in Scottish “loch.” In the Fraser alphabet, a consonant with no written vowel after it carries an inherent open “a” sound; a written vowel is a separate letter.

The Fraser script uses adapted Latin-like forms, which explains the resemblance to H. ꓧ remains a distinct Lisu character.

where did ꓧ come from?

It comes from the Fraser alphabet, developed for writing Lisu.

One account dates the script’s basis to between 1908 and 1914, while another gives about 1915. James O. Fraser and Lisu Christian pastors revised it; Fraser’s 1922 Handbook is an early printed witness. The alphabet was made to write spoken Lisu and support Christian teaching, Bible translation, hymns, and literature; its forms were designed to be learnable in weeks.

A 2008 encoding proposal records Fraser-script use in education, publishing, media, religion, and administration. Other Lisu writing systems include a syllabary—a script where each sign represents a syllable—drawing on Chinese, Dongba, and Geba traditions, and a Pinyin-based orthography devised between 1956 and 1958, used especially by non-Christians in China. These are distinct ways of writing Lisu, not alternate forms of ꓧ.

how do i type ꓧ?

Use a Lisu keyboard or input method.

A font draws the character; a Lisu keyboard or input tool inserts it into text. A font can cover the full script and still offer no way to enter its letters.

ꓧ belongs to Lisu or Fraser-script writing and signals that orthographic context.

Latin H looks close, but it is a different character and cannot stand in for ꓧ.

why is ꓧ missing from my screen?

The active font or app may lack Lisu coverage. Try one that supports the script; that fixes display, while typing still needs an input method.
