Mahajani letter U

What 𑅒 means

It is Mahajani’s standalone vowel letter for u. Mahajani has no small vowel signs attached to consonants, so a full vowel letter can follow one when its vowel needs to be made clear. Depending on the word and regional spelling, 𑅒 can represent short or long u, o, or au.

Mahajani is a Brahmi-based commercial script used across northern India until the mid-20th century for merchant account books and financial records in Hindi, Marwari, and Punjabi. Its name refers to bankers and moneylenders; merchant communities learned business writing with it. Primers, manuals, and printed specimens from the nineteenth century show it in teaching and use.

Mahajani resembles Kaithi and Devanagari and Landa scripts of Punjab and Sindh, which are related to Sharada; Gurmukhi also developed from Landa. Two broad regional styles are documented: Delhi and farther west, and eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Their letter sets are nearly alike, with small differences in glyph shape. Historical accounts describe Mahajani as difficult for readers outside commerce to understand. In some historical regional forms, 𑅒 also represented o where 𑅔 was absent.

How do I type 𑅒?

Use a Unicode entry method or a Mahajani keyboard. Unicode’s 2026 guidance describes Linux GNOME and other GTK desktops: press CtrlShiftU, type 11152, then Enter or Space; KDE and Qt desktops do not offer that same shortcut. On macOS, Unicode Hex Input accepts only four digits, so open Character Viewer or use a Mahajani keyboard.

Keyman’s 2024 listing offers a Mahajani Inscript keyboard for desktop and mobile. The glyph also needs a Mahajani font; a blank square usually means the active font has no Mahajani coverage, not that the text contains a different letter.

Its register is historical commercial writing; it belongs in Mahajani text, archival records, or transcription.

A blank box usually means the font lacks Mahajani coverage, not that this is another letter.
