Related forms for five and six appear in Pallava inscriptions, carved texts from South India; similar numerals are reported in the Cera kingdom of southern India at the end of the fifth century. Malayalam and Tamil numerals belong to a wider South Indian family, and both scripts developed from Brahmi, an ancient Indian script. In 2005, a Unicode proposal described traditional Malayalam numerals as no longer in contemporary use, yet still needed for digitizing old manuscripts and mathematical texts.
