ര is Malayalam ra, pronounced with a light tongue tap just behind your upper teeth. In ordinary writing, it represents r with a built-in short a unless another sign changes the vowel. In consonant clusters, its displayed form can sit before the letter you typed first.

It represents a light r followed by a short a.

A vowel sign changes the built-in vowel of Malayalam ra. To join it to a preceding consonant, the virama, called candrakkala in Malayalam, removes that consonant's built-in vowel. The result is a consonant cluster, as in പ്ര.

Malayalam writing developed through Vatteluttu, an older script used for Malayalam, and Grantha, used for Sanskrit. Grantha supplied consonants needed for Sanskrit words, including religious texts. The Vazhappally inscription, a text carved in stone, dates to about 830 CE and is an early Malayalam record.

Is ര the same as റ?

No. ര and റ are separate Malayalam consonants.
