malayalam vowel sign e

Malayalam Vowel Sign E

68/118

The Malayalam e-matra marks e after a consonant: ക െ forms കെ (ke). Use എ for an initial e. In text the sign follows its consonant, even though it appears on the left.

What െ means

It changes a consonant’s built-in a to e. This e-matra is a dependent vowel sign: it attaches to a consonant. For example, ക െ becomes കെ, romanized as ke.

For e at the start of a word or syllable, Malayalam uses the independent vowel letter എ. The sign െ belongs with a consonant; it does not replace that letter.

How did the Malayalam script develop?

Malayalam writing grew through older South Indian scripts. Its written form developed through Vatteluttu and Grantha, two older South Indian scripts. Vatteluttu appears in southern Indian stone inscriptions from the 4th century CE.

Among the oldest surviving examples of Malayalam writing are the Vazhapalli plates, dated 882–883 CE. Around the 1500s, literary Malayalam increasingly used Arya, a local script derived from Grantha, while adapting some Vatteluttu forms to represent Malayalam sounds.

The 1971 spelling reform responded to printing and typewriter difficulties by simplifying complex vowel-and-consonant forms, especially ones involving u and ū.

Why does െ appear before its consonant?

It follows the consonant in text and is drawn on its left. Enter the consonant first and the sign second. Malayalam text keeps that order, while a font repositions the mark for display: ക െ appears as കെ.

With an initial consonant cluster, െ appears to the left of the cluster as a whole, rather than splitting it.

A spelling mark, not a conversational symbol: it changes the vowel in a Malayalam consonant syllable.

For e at the start of a syllable, use എ; െ needs a consonant.

Why is െ a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
