Text symbol

What ࡕ means

It writes the plain t sound in Mandaic.

ࡕ is a consonant inside a Mandaic word. The letter name “At” is not the English word “at.”

The Mandaean religious community developed the script to write Eastern Aramaic, a regional form of Aramaic used in religious texts. Its emergence is placed in the late Parthian period, especially the second century CE; the earliest securely dateable written evidence includes magical Mandaean material from the third/fourth centuries CE.

Is ࡕ a religious sign on its own?

No; it is an alphabet letter, not an emblem.

In Classical Mandaic, the traditional written form, it appears in liturgical texts. Neo-Mandaic is a modern spoken variety. The religious setting comes from a text’s words and use, not from this letter by itself.

Mandaic follows the inherited Aramaic alphabetic order. Its exact derivation remains debated; documented links point to Parthian-influenced scripts associated with Elymais and Characene, ancient regions of the Near East. That is a script-history connection, not a reason to substitute a similar-looking letter from another script.

Why can ࡕ change shape in a word?

Joining and writing direction affect its shape.

Mandaic is written from right to left, and ࡕ joins to letters on both sides. Its isolated form may therefore look different from its connected form in a word; the character itself is the same.

In some teaching material, the affrication mark (a pronunciation mark) ࡙ after ࡕ signals a softer sound transcribed as θ. It is made with air passing near the teeth without voicing, and is distinct from the plain t reading.

It belongs in Mandaic writing or script study; by itself it does not set a general chat tone.

Without a Mandaic font, the character can appear as an empty square.
