Marchen Letter Tsa

19/68

𑲂 is a Marchen consonant conventionally transliterated as “tsa”; alone, it is a letter, not a word. Marchen served Bön liturgical writing in Zhang-zhung, and a 2011 proposal also reports its use for Tibetan. Vowel signs and consonants stacked below a base letter shape the written syllable. Marchen has no mark between each syllable, so a long line can leave boundaries unclear.

What 𑲂 means

𑲂 is a Marchen consonant, not a complete word.

Its conventional Latin transliteration is “tsa”; that label names the consonant, not a word. Marchen works as an abugida, a writing system where each base consonant carries a default vowel unless a vowel sign changes it. A second consonant may sit below the base to form a vertical stack.

Marchen has no mark between every syllable, so long passages can leave syllable boundaries unclear. A lone 𑲂 cannot be translated as a full word without the surrounding text.

Why was the Greater Mar script used?

It served Bön liturgical writing, including Zhang-zhung texts.

Marchen is the Greater Mar script; distinct related Bön scripts include Marchung (Lesser Mar), Pungchen, Pungchung, and Drusha. A 2011 Unicode proposal says the Zhang-zhung word smar means “good,” “happy,” or “beautiful,” and reports Marchen in Bön literature, architectural inscriptions, and use for Tibetan.

Traditional Bön accounts place the Mar scripts in ancient Zhang-zhung, before Buddhism entered Tibet in the seventh century. A 2011 study of old letter forms argues that surviving Greater Mar examples mix a Tibetan style with horizontal strokes over the letters and the Indian Nāgarī script; it says most scripts of this decorative or esoteric kind probably developed after the tenth century. A 2011 encoding proposal notes few known premodern examples and calls an inscription in Zhang-zhung on a bronze seal at Menri Monastery one of the earliest Marchen examples.

Specialist and archival: it belongs in Marchen writing or a script, font, or input-method test.

Do not translate an isolated 𑲂 as a complete word.

Why does Marchen show as a box?

Usually the font lacks the character. If single letters display but stacked forms fail, the app may also lack the shaping support needed to position them; some renderers mishandle deep stacks.
