What 𝚬 means
Mathematical type weight can tell readers that a letter represents a different variable or kind of quantity. One established convention uses bold for vectors, especially in physics and applied mathematics.
Gibbs’s 1881 Elements of Vector Analysis used small Greek letters for vectors—quantities with size and direction. Wilson’s 1901 textbook helped make bold type influential for distinguishing vectors from plain scalar quantities. Later authors used type weight for other distinctions. Unicode accepted the STIX mathematical-alphabet proposal in 1999 so styled letters could retain their distinctions in plain text.
Why does 𝚬 turn into Ε?
NFKC can map it to plain Greek Ε.
NFKC is a Unicode compatibility-cleanup mode that reduces specially styled letters to their Greek or Latin base letters. Text processed this way can lose the distinction between 𝚬 and an unstyled epsilon.

1Why does 𝚬 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
