What 𝛆 means
It marks a Greek epsilon as a distinct mathematical variable.
A 1999 proposal to Unicode, the standard for computer text characters, documented bold Greek and Latin letters already used in scientific publishing. Giving styles separate characters lets unformatted formulas preserve which variable is meant.
Can text processing erase the bold distinction?
Yes. Compatibility normalization can fold it to plain ε.
NFKC normalization and NFKD can fold mathematical style distinctions into base Greek letters. If the distinction matters in an equation or data exchange, use a workflow that preserves the original character.
Why might 𝛆 look different on another screen?
The selected font can change its displayed shape.
Unicode's 2025 report on mathematical notation notes that some systems lack the specialized math fonts these characters need, so a glyph may be missing or differ from the chart design.
