What 𝛄 means
Its mathematical role is distinct; the formula or author defines it.
Bold Greek letters give a formula another alphabet style, so 𝛄 can name a variable distinct from plain γ. A vector is a quantity with size and direction; a scalar is one value. Gibbs's 1881 Elements of Vector Analysis used small Greek letters for vectors. Wilson's 1901 textbook, based on Gibbs's lectures, helped popularize bold type for vectors and ordinary type for scalars. Later authors used type styles for other distinctions, so check the notation key.
Unicode's mathematical alphabets preserve these distinctions in plain text. In LaTeX, \boldsymbol{\gamma} with amsmath or \symbf{\gamma} with unicode-math produces bold gamma.
Why can bold gamma become plain gamma?
A text-cleanup step can normalize it to plain γ.
NFKC is a compatibility-normalization process that can replace mathematical alphanumeric letters with their plain Greek base. That removes the bold distinction, which can change a formula's meaning.
A formal math style; its role comes from the notation.
Bold alone does not mean “vector.”
