What 𝛃 means
The weight carries mathematical meaning. Bold lowercase letters commonly mark vectors in physics and applied math; the equation defines what β names.
Scientific publishers were already using distinct mathematical letter styles by 1998. A Unicode proposal that year argued that bold and plain letters can name different variables, so plain text should preserve the distinction.
