What 𝐍 means
It is a mathematical letter, but not a fixed label.
Boldface can distinguish a quantity from plain N or mark an object such as a vector; it does not settle N’s meaning. Mathematician Richard Dedekind used N for naturals in 1888; Peano followed in 1889. In 1895, Peano used N for positive integers and N₀ for those plus zero. A 1999 proposal by STIX, a project involving scientific publishers, gives the reason: math styles can carry distinct meanings, so plain text must preserve them.

1Does NFKC change bold N?
Yes. NFKC is Unicode’s compatibility normalization: it turns 𝐍 into plain N and drops the bold distinction.
