What 𝟏 means
It is the digit one in a distinct mathematical bold style. In an equation, the heavier shape can mark that this one plays a different role from an ordinary 1, if the formula’s notation uses that convention. Its value is still one; bold alone does not tell you the role.
Unicode expanded its earlier Letterlike Symbols collection into a systematic family of mathematical styles in 2001, so mathematical distinctions could be preserved in plain text. That is why 𝟏 is a separate character rather than a bold display setting.
How do I type a mathematical bold 1?
In Microsoft Word, enter its hexadecimal value and use Alt+X. Type 1D7CF, then press Alt+X; Word replaces the code with 𝟏. Bold formatting changes the appearance of an ordinary 1 in a rich-text document, but does not create this separate character.
Heavy and formal-looking; its mathematical role comes from the notation around it.
For prose, use ordinary `1` with real bold formatting; a font without 𝟏 may show a missing-character box or blank.

1Why does 𝟏 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.

A visible symbol can contain several code points. JS .length counts UTF-16 units; UTF-8 counts bytes.
