What 𝓪 means
It is a separate mathematical letter, not a value by itself. A formula assigns the quantity it names; 𝓪 has no fixed meaning across equations.
Why encode 𝓪 separately?
Mathematical styles can distinguish one symbol from another.
By the 1999 proposal, bold and script alphabets were already used in research mathematics. STIX, a scientific-publishing font project, proposed separate characters to preserve each style's distinct meaning and keep plain-text math searchable.
Some software applies NFKC, a Unicode compatibility-normalization form, which can turn 𝓪 into plain a and erase the distinction in a formula.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𝓪 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
