mathematical bold script small x

Mathematical Bold Script Small X

246/996

𝔁 is a bold script x used in mathematical notation to distinguish one variable from other letters. It has no fixed value by itself; the surrounding formula assigns its role. The script drawing varies by math font, and NFKC normalization can fold it to plain x.

What 𝔁 means

Its mathematical role is local: the equation assigns its value or job.

An author may choose this form to keep one x separate from other variables. No general convention makes it a particular number, operation, or object; read the formula's definitions.

Why encode bold script x separately?

Mathematical style can carry meaning, not just decoration.

By 1999, scientific publishers were already using styled alphabets in formulas. A proposal involving the STIX publishing project and MathML contributors sought separate plain-text characters so distinctions between math alphabets could survive on the web and in text search.

Fonts draw script letters differently; the encoded form tells you which mathematical style was chosen, not one master shape.

For equations that distinguish letter styles; in ordinary prose it reads as a specialist letter.
