What 𝛓 means
In Word for Windows, as of 2026, enter 1D6D3 and press AltX.
If other hexadecimal digits touch the value, select only 1D6D3 before conversion; otherwise Word may read them as part of one longer code.
What does the bold style signal?
It marks a mathematical distinction, not decoration.
Greek ς is the lowercase form used at the end of a Greek word; 𝛓 is its bold mathematical counterpart. In a formula, this bold form can distinguish a variable from plain or differently styled symbols; the character itself has no universal formula meaning.
Some text-cleaning steps, called compatibility normalization, map 𝛓 to ordinary ς and discard the bold distinction. If a formula relies on that distinction, use a process that preserves the character rather than normalizing it.
Its bold mathematical style can distinguish a variable from other forms of sigma.
For Greek words, use ς and apply text bolding; 𝛓 is intended for mathematical or technical notation.
