What 𝐯 means
In physics and applied math, vector notation often uses bold lowercase letters. A vector has direction as well as size; a scalar has size alone. The exact role of 𝐯 still depends on the notation set out in that text.
This convention grew as physicists studying electricity and magnetism sought to set vectors apart from scalars. The physicist James Clerk Maxwell promoted Fraktur, an ornate blackletter style, in 1873. Physicist Oliver Heaviside later adopted bold Clarendon, a heavy serif style, and introduced it for vectors in 1886 because it was easier to read.
Is 𝐯 just bold formatting?
No; 𝐯 is a separate character, not a font switch. In a formula, that lets plain text keep the mathematical distinction. As of 2026, people also repurpose 𝐯 as faux-bold text in plain-text fields. It changes one character, not a whole word's formatting; mathematical alphabets are meant for math or technical distinctions.

1Questions people ask
1Why did 𝐯 turn into plain v?
A text cleanup called compatibility normalization (NFKC) maps 𝐯 to ordinary v. That can erase a math distinction, so avoid this cleanup when the notation relies on the style.
