What 𝕎 means
It marks a mathematical label; the text tells you what it names.
An introductory course text uses 𝕎 for whole numbers starting at zero. In another formula, W may label a different set or object; follow the definition where it first appears.
Why are the strokes doubled?
They distinguish a math letter from an ordinary W.
The style grew from doubling chalk strokes so a mathematical letter stood apart on the blackboard. A 1985 notice from the American Mathematical Society, which publishes mathematical texts, lists an uppercase blackboard-bold alphabet for TeX, a system for typesetting mathematical text.
The Unicode 18.0 math chart permits font variations so long as the doubled-stroke feature remains.
Why can 𝕎 turn into W?
Compatibility normalization can erase its double-struck distinction.
NFKC is a Unicode text-normalization form that folds compatibility variants: it turns 𝕎 into ordinary W. That can help match styled letters to their base forms, but it loses the mathematical styling; preserve the original when the distinction matters.
Mathematical notation, not a tone marker in ordinary prose.
Don’t assume W means whole numbers; check the definition in that text.

1Questions people ask
1Why does 𝕎 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
