What 𝕘 means
It marks a distinct mathematical g; the formula gives its role. Double-struck, also called blackboard bold, grew from chalkboard writing: writers doubled selected strokes to make letters stand out when ordinary bold was hard to write in chalk. In print, double-struck capitals became labels for number systems, such as ℝ for the real numbers and ℤ for the integers. Unicode preserves older forms such as ℝ in a separate character group called Letterlike Symbols, then extends the mathematical alphabet to lowercase letters such as 𝕘.
Mathematical and technical: double-struck marks a distinct letter in notation, rather than simple bold emphasis.
In ordinary prose, 𝕘 remains a different character from plain g.

1Why does 𝕘 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
