What 𝞆 means
It marks a mathematical style; the formula supplies the specific meaning.
Math formulas use different letter styles to keep variables distinct. The base letter is ordinary Greek small chi, χ; 𝞆 adds bold, upright sans-serif styling. In a 1999 Unicode proposal, the authors explained that plain H and bold H can name different quantities in one formula; collapsing the styles would erase that distinction.
In 1881, J. Willard Gibbs used small Greek letters for vectors; E. B. Wilson's 1901 textbook used bold type to distinguish vectors from scalars. Later writers used bold for other distinctions, so this letter alone does not declare itself a vector.
Technical mathematical notation; the type style carries notation.
Bold can indicate a vector in some traditions, but this chi alone does not guarantee one.

1Questions people ask
2Why does 𝞆 turn into χ?
Yes. NFKC or NFKD compatibility normalization folds mathematical style characters to their base letters, turning 𝞆 into ordinary χ.
Why does 𝞆 look plain in MathML?
It can. Under MathML 4.0, a renderer may ignore a mathematical style when no suitable font glyph is available, leaving the formula without its bold sans-serif appearance.
