What 𝖣 means
It is a D in a distinct mathematical sans-serif style. In a formula, 𝖣 can name a different variable—a value or object named by a letter—from plain D. The formula tells you what it represents.
Mathematical publishers used styled alphabets before Unicode encoded them. A 1999 proposal lists sans-serif Latin letters as already used by scientific and technical publishers, explaining that changing style can change a symbol’s mathematical meaning. Encoding the styles separately preserves that distinction in plain text.
Unicode encodes the mathematical sans-serif style but does not prescribe one exact design. The font supplies the drawing, so 𝖣 can look slightly different across fonts.
Use it in mathematical or technical notation when the sans-serif style distinguishes a symbol; ordinary prose should use D with font styling.

Questions people ask
1Why might 𝖣 become a plain D?
Unicode compatibility-normalization processes called NFKC or NFKD can fold mathematical letters to their base letters. That erases the style distinction, so avoid applying them to formula text that depends on it.
