What 𝗍 means
It marks the Latin letter t in a mathematical sans-serif style.
The character does not name one standard quantity. In a particular formula, its style may set it apart from plain or italic t; the notation tells you what each symbol stands for.
Why is 𝗍 different from t?
Mathematicians and scientific publishers were already using styled Latin and Greek alphabets when Unicode's 1999 proposal sought to encode them for mathematical and scientific publishing. The reason was practical: styles can distinguish symbols within one formula, and separate characters preserve that information in plain text and basic searches. The proposal documents the encoding rationale; 1999 is not the start of mathematical sans-serif lettering.
In mathematics, its sans-serif style can distinguish a symbol; it does not identify one fixed kind of quantity.
In ordinary prose, it is not just formatted t; exact-text tools may treat it as a different character.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𝗍 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
