What 𝗒 means
It is a separate mathematical letter; its value depends on the formula.
Different letter styles let a formula keep variables apart, so 𝗒 can differ from plain y in the same expression. Sans serif does not assign it one fixed meaning. In LaTeX, \mathsf{y} requests this style. The Scientific and Technical Information Exchange (STIX), a project backed by scientific publishers, proposed encoded math alphabets in 1999 so plain-text formulas could preserve distinctions like these.
Why does mathematical sans-serif y turn into plain y?
Compatibility normalization can fold it to ordinary y.
Unicode normalization is a way software standardizes text. Its compatibility forms, NFKC and NFKD, can convert this character to plain Latin y; NFC keeps this compatibility distinction. If a formula relies on the difference, use a process that preserves it.
Use it in math when the notation assigns it a role; Unicode advises against using it to style ordinary prose.
In an ordinary word, it is a different character from plain y, so text tools may handle it differently.
