What 𝋢 means
In the Maya dot-and-bar system, each dot is one and each bar is five; 𝋢 combines two dots.
The Long Count, a long-span Maya calendar, stacked numerals: a two in the twenties place was 40. Its year unit had 360 days (18 20 days) plus five extra days for a 365-day year.
The system's roots lie in tally marks shared across the region. One of the earliest combined bar-and-dot numbers appears in Zapotec writing (another southern Mexican culture) at Monte Albán, around 500–200 BCE. Maya inscriptions and the Dresden Codex, a surviving Maya book, used numerals for dates and astronomy tied to ritual divination. In 2016, a Unicode proposal documented Mayan numerals on Guatemalan banknotes and in school lessons in Mexico and Central America.
Questions people ask
1Why does 𝋢 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
