What 🦾 means
A prosthetic arm, with room for a flex. Apple proposed it in March 2018 in an accessibility emoji collection developed with disability organizations, so people with limb differences had a symbol for an arm prosthesis. Unicode review then widened the idea beyond prosthetics, and it arrived together with 🦿 in 2019. That wider brief is why the robot arm emoji also shows up for gym progress, recovery and tech doing the heavy lifting.
What does it mean when someone sends you 🦾?
Usually hype; literal only when prosthetics are the topic. Under a workout photo or a finished deadline, the sender is calling you (or themselves) stronger, upgraded, back in form. If the conversation is about someone's own prosthesis, take it at face value and follow their wording. When no clue fits, just ask.
Friendly and upbeat for your own strength, recovery or robot jokes.
Never aim it at someone else's real limb to tease.

Questions people ask
2Is the mechanical arm emoji offensive?
No. It was made for disability representation, and flexes or robot jokes are ordinary uses. It turns hurtful only when you point it at someone else's real disability to tease.
Why does the mechanical arm emoji look like a thumbs-up on some phones?
Because vendors draw it differently. As of 2026, JoyPixels and OpenMoji show a raised thumb, while most other designs show a flexing fist, so it can read as approval instead of muscle.
