Medefaidrin Small Letter R

61/91

𖹼 is the R letter in Medefaidrin, a sacred language used by the Obɛri Ɔkaimɛ Christian church in Nigeria. It has no word meaning by itself: it belongs within written words. Its capital counterpart is 𖹜, and typing it and displaying it require separate input and font support.

What 𖹼 means

It is the Medefaidrin small-form R letter, used inside words. By itself, 𖹼 is an isolated letter rather than a word or a complete message; read it as part of the surrounding Medefaidrin text.

Medefaidrin was created in the 1930s as a sacred language for the Obɛri Ɔkaimɛ Christian church, whose name means “Church freely given.” Its members spoke Ibibio-Efik in daily life. Community tradition says Bishop Aikeld (Michael) Ukpong received the language by revelation in 1927; a separate account places the language’s revelation or impact in 1932. Church secretary Jakeld Udofia transcribed it.

By 1936, the language was finalized and the church had opened a school to teach it; British colonial authorities soon closed the school. Members continued using Medefaidrin for worship, hymns, letters, and contracts, and Udofia restarted Sunday-school teaching in 1986. The alphabet has capital and small letters and is written left to right; its case system shows the influence of English writing conventions.

How do I type 𖹼 and make it display?

Use a Medefaidrin-aware keyboard or input method. A standard Latin R key produces a different character; choose an input layout that includes Medefaidrin. Keyboard support and font support are separate.

If 𖹼 appears as an empty box, the active font likely lacks Medefaidrin coverage. The box points to a display issue, not a different character.

Script-specific: it belongs in Medefaidrin text, writing instruction, or discussion of the script.

A lone 𖹼 is one letter, not a whole Medefaidrin word.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𖹼 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Medefaidrin block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
