What 𖼝 means
It marks the consonant that opens a written syllable.
The Pollard/Miao system has an initial, the opening consonant, and a final, the vowel, ending sound, or both. Depending on the orthography, tone is shown by the final's position or by a separate tone mark.
A solitary 𖼝 marks only the beginning of a syllable, so ask for the surrounding text before settling on a pronunciation or translation.
How did the Pollard/Miao script develop?
It took shape through shared design, literacy work, and reform.
Work began around 1905 through collaboration between Methodist missionary Samuel Pollard and A-Hmao collaborators Yang Yage and Li Shitifan. A-Hmao is a Miao language. The practical aim was literacy through lessons, Bible translation, and general reading. The design also drew on Cree syllabics, a writing system used for Cree languages, so Pollard was not the sole creator.
The script stabilized in 1936. In the 1950s, Chinese authorities promoted a Pinyin-based alternative written with Latin letters; a reform in 1988 changed tone notation. Its public role shifted from Christian mission literacy to state-led script standardization, while older and reformed forms continued side by side. As of 28 April 2026, A-Hmao orthography notes still describe Pollard/Miao as primary for A-Hmao.
Why does Miao text look misaligned or change shape?
Miao-aware shaping places syllable marks in position.
In the older orthography, vowel or final and tone marks follow the initial in text order, but display above, beside, or below it. A basic font or layout engine may leave them beside 𖼝 instead of composing the intended syllable.
Some fonts draw 𖼝 with a small wart or dot. Unicode treats those drawings as style variants of the same character. If marks appear out of place, check the font and shaping support before changing the initial.

𖼝\16F1DWhy is 𖼝 a box on my screen?
fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
