miao letter tlhya

Miao Letter Tlhya

29/149

𖼜 is a Miao consonant that starts a syllable in A-Hmao. In Pollard Miao, vowel or rhyme marks and tone information complete the syllable; the letter alone is not a word. In the reformed spelling, it represents /tɬ/—a t-like sound released with air along the sides of the tongue—and 𖼚 can write the same sound.

What 𖼜 means

It is the consonant at a syllable’s start. In A-Hmao, one Miao language, 𖼜 begins a syllable; rhyme marks supply the vowel, and the orthography marks its tone. In the reformed Pollard spelling, this letter represents /tɬ/, a t-like stop released with air along the sides of the tongue.

The Pollard Miao script took shape around 1904–1905 for the Northeast Yunnan Miao language, also called A-Hmao. Missionary Samuel Pollard worked with Miao and Chinese collaborators; they adapted Latin-letter variants, English shorthand signs (fast note-taking symbols), Miao pictographs, and Cree syllabic signs (symbols for whole syllables). The wider script has also served other Miao varieties and some Yi and Lisu languages.

Its spelling changed repeatedly before stabilizing in 1936, when a New Testament translation appeared. A Pinyin-based alternative came in 1957; a semi-official reformed Pollard spelling has existed alongside the older spelling since 1988.

How do I type it in an A-Hmao syllable?

Enter the onset consonant before its vowel and tone marks. When used, the separate prenasalization mark 𖽐 comes first, followed by the consonant, optional aspiration mark 𖽑, rhyme marks, and tone mark.

Rhyme marks can render around 𖼜 rather than in a line after it. In the older layout, their position also signals tone, so what you see on screen need not match the stored character order.

Technical and neutral, suited to A-Hmao spelling, language learning, and writing-system discussion.

Questions people ask

1

Why can 𖼜 look different in different fonts?

Font style. Some Miao consonants appear with a small wart in one design and a dot in another; the 1988 spelling uses dots for letters shown with warts in the Unicode chart. The two forms are treated as the same character.

Why is 𖼜 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
