Modi Letter La

𑘩 is the Modi-script consonant la, a letter used inside syllables rather than a complete word by itself. Modi, also called Modi lipi, developed as fast cursive for Marathi administrative records and correspondence; printing and official policy later shifted everyday Marathi writing toward Devanagari. Alone, this glyph is a letter sample; surrounding vowels and consonants supply its word-level reading.

What 𑘩 means

It is Modi’s consonant la, read as part of a syllable. In Modi script, a consonant normally carries an unwritten inherent vowel; a vowel sign changes it, and a virama (a mark that removes it) cancels it. The isolated letter does not identify a complete Marathi word.

Modi, also called Modi lipi, is a cursive script developed for fast writing. A Unicode proposal describes proto-Modi forms in the 12th century; a Pune history account says the surviving documents it discusses begin in the 16th century. The script had regional and historical styles, so this standardized character does not promise one manuscript outline.

Scribes used Modi for Marathi orders, revenue and land records, trade documents, and correspondence across Maratha territories. By the 1950s, printing and official preference had shifted Marathi’s default writing toward Devanagari. The two scripts are historically related and use a similar consonant-and-vowel structure, including vowel signs and a mark that suppresses the inherent vowel; their letters remain script-specific.

What if someone sends 𑘩 alone?

Treat it as a letter sample or script reference. A lone consonant leaves the word unspecified; neighboring letters and vowel marks determine its reading. If someone expects you to read a passage, ask for the rest of the Modi text.

In an archival document, 𑘩 is one consonant in the spelling. Outside a running text or lesson, the clearest reading is a deliberate script sample or a font/input test.

Why does 𑘩 look different in different fonts?

The encoded letter stays the same; its outline can vary. Modi is cursive and has several historical styles; the Unicode proposal’s chart uses a Chitnisi-inspired design, named for one Modi handwriting style. Font shaping joins characters and positions vowel marks, so a syllable containing 𑘩 can look unlike the isolated letter.

In a historical or language-learning context, it reads as a Marathi-script letter; alone in casual chat, as a script sample.

A lone consonant is not a complete Marathi word.
