What ᵐ means
It marks a very short m-like sound in Uralic transcription.
The Uralic Phonetic Alphabet (UPA), also known as Finno-Ugric transcription (FUT), is a family of systems for recording Uralic languages. Its raised letters can mark very short sounds; the notation also captures sound patterns and word histories.
The family has a documented starting point in Eemil Nestor Setälä's work from 1901. The Unicode proposal for UPA cites sample transcriptions by Setälä and Mikko Szilasi from that same year. UPA/FUT systems can differ, so follow the key named by the source.
How do I type ᵐ?
On the documented Windows layout, use AltGr M.
As of 2026, a documented Windows keyboard layout for UPA, also labeled SUT, assigns ᵐ to AltGr M. Hold AltGr and press M when that layout is active.
ᵐ is a separate character with a phonetic role. A superscript m made with rich-text styling is ordinary m displayed higher; it does not carry ᵐ's phonetic meaning.
In phonetic text, ᵐ signals a specific transcription convention, not small type.
A raised m in ordinary text is not automatically this phonetic character.

2Is ᵐ an IPA symbol?
Not as a standard IPA letter. ᵐ is chiefly associated with UPA, though it appears in some phonetic transcription practice; follow the key used by your source.
Can I use ᵐ as a superscript?
Only when your notation assigns it this phonetic role. For an exponent, footnote, or ordinary small text, use rich-text superscript styling; ᵐ is a separate character, not a formatting control.
