musical symbol circle x notehead

Circle X Notehead

68/225

𝅅 is a circled-X notehead, not a fixed instrument cue. In drum notation, the score’s legend identifies which part it marks.

Text symbol

What 𝅅 means

It marks a notehead shape; the score’s legend assigns its meaning.

A notehead sits on the musical staff. Drum notation uses notehead shapes to distinguish instruments, but the circled X has no universal assignment. A 2026 report says score software Verovio 6.1.0 changed the circle x notehead in MusicXML, a score-sharing format, to a slash on import. Check the preview.

Questions people ask

1

Does a circled X always mean an open hi-hat?

No. A hi-hat is a pair of cymbals controlled by a pedal. Some drum notation marks its open sound with a small “o” above a plain X; this glyph puts X inside a circle. Use the score’s legend.
