Triangle-Round Black Notehead

84/225

𝅕 is a filled, triangle-round notehead used in shape-note music, a system that gives noteheads different shapes for singing syllables. In Aikin’s seven-shape system, it marks ti, also called si, but Funk and Walker systems use other shapes for that syllable. Alone, it gives no pitch or duration, so ask which notation the sender means.

What 𝅕 means

It names a notehead shape, not a complete musical note.

On a staff, the head’s position tells you pitch; its shape can identify a singing syllable in shape-note systems. Stems and flags add information about note length, and this standalone character has none of that surrounding structure.

Shape-note singing grew in American singing schools in the early nineteenth century. The first documented four-shape system appears in The Easy Instructor, a singing-school book from 1801, using fa, sol, la, and mi. Christian Minstrel, Jesse B. Aikin’s seven-shape singing-school book from 1846, added do, re, and ti. In that system, this shape-note ti notehead marks ti, also called si, the seventh singing syllable. Funk and Walker systems assigned that syllable other shapes.

What does 𝅕 mean if someone sends it?

It points to specialist music notation; ask which system the sender means.

A score supplies staff position and surrounding symbols; the standalone character does not tell you pitch or duration.

Name the tradition before assigning a singing syllable: 𝅕 can mark ti or si in Aikin-style notation, while Funk and Walker use other shapes for that syllable.

Why might 𝅕 look different in a score?

A music font may draw a separate glyph for shape-note scores.

SMuFL (Standard Music Font Layout), a standard for music fonts, lists 𝅕 as a general triangle-round notehead and  as a separate shape-note glyph. A notation program may use the font-specific form in a score; it is not the same Unicode character.

If 𝅕 appears as a box, blank, or generic triangle, the active font may lack its glyph or draw it differently.

Score-bound and specialist: the shape can mark a singing syllable, but its reading depends on the notation tradition.

Ask which shape-note system is in use before reading this as ti or si.
