Khamti Oay Logogram

Text symbol

What ꩴ means

It records a spoken Khamti form of address.

The marked forms are not interchangeable: ꩴႊ is used to address a loved one, and ꩴး to address someone far away. The bare base does not tell an outsider which form is intended.

Khamti writing follows Myanmar conventions shaped by Shan writing. The Aiton and Phake writing systems are close neighbors of Khamti's. A Tay/Shan script on a Ming scroll dated 1407 shows extensive borrowing from Burmese within the wider script family; it is family history, not evidence that ꩴ itself was in use then.

Why does a tone mark change Khamti Oay?

The mark records tone and selects the address reading.

Older Khamti writing did not mark tones. The writing tradition was later largely lost, then revised and revived in newer orthographies that mark most tones and put more pronunciation information into the text.

In the Unicode 17.0.0 reference chart, Khamti is shown in a harmonized Burmese style. Local Khamti forms may add small dots; Khamti tone circles are usually filled, while Shan fonts often draw them open. A font can change those visual cues without changing the encoded text.

What if someone sends Khamti Oay alone?

You need the surrounding Khamti context to read it.

Without the tone mark or surrounding Khamti words, the sender's intended form of address is unclear. Ask for the full phrase before reading it as affection or distance.

A specialized Khamti logogram for speech transcription; its tone mark distinguishes two forms of address.

Bare ꩴ does not mean “I love you” by itself.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ꩴ show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Myanmar Extended-A block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
