What ꩰ means
It repeats the preceding Khamti Shan syllable.
In reading, it saves writing the same syllable twice. It is a spacing character, and its glyph can join with two diacritics—small marks placed near a syllable—even when a tone mark lies between them.
How did Khamti writing change?
Khamti has more than one written tradition.
Khamti writing uses the Myanmar script model with conventions used for Shan writing. A 2008 proposal for computer encoding of New Khamti Shan describes one revision and contrasts it with an older historic Khamti script that it calls largely lost; the date records the proposal, not the mark's invention.
A separate 2021 account of Tai Khamti in India describes two script revisions led by Khamti scholars and revised primers used in Namsai schools. The New Khamti Shan proposal describes a revision chosen by the wider community. Across these settings, ꩰ keeps its role as a repetition mark.
How do I type ꩰ?
Insert it as a separate character, not as a mark attached to another letter.
Use a Unicode-aware input method or a Khamti Shan keyboard; exact steps depend on your device. Its visible form comes from the active font, so a font without Khamti support may show a box or fallback.
It is a spelling mark within Khamti writing, not general punctuation.
Outside Khamti text, a reader may not know which syllable to repeat.
