Burmese Locative Mark

77/160

၌ (hnaik) means “at,” “in,” or “on” in written Burmese, placed after the noun for a place or time. Casual Burmese uses မှာ, so ၌ sounds bookish.

Text symbol

What ၌ means

The locative postposition — it follows the noun for a place or time.

၌ shortens နှိုက်, a locative spelling common in Bagan-period (1000–1300 CE) texts; medieval inscriptions already show the ancestor nhuik/nhik.

Written Burmese also uses တွင်; a 1915 grammar already contrasted literary hnaik with modern hma (မှာ).

Formal and bookish — the written-register choice.

In casual chat it can read like a textbook.

Why does ၌ show as a box?

A missing Myanmar font shows a box; a Unicode/Zawgyi mismatch also garbles text — Zawgyi is a legacy encoding.
