What ⋂ means
It keeps only elements shared by every set.
This set intersection is indexed: in ⋂ᵢ Aᵢ, an element belongs in the result only if it belongs to every Aᵢ; i marks the sets.
Grassmann used ∩ and ∪ as general operation signs in 1844. Peano used ∩ for intersection and ∪ for union in 1888, then introduced their enlarged forms in 1908 in the fifth volume of Formulario mathematico, a multi-volume formula collection, so one operation could cover more than two classes (collections treated like sets).

1Why does ⋂ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
