Neutral Chess Equihopper

🩊 is a neutral equihopper: either side may treat it as its own. It hops over a hurdle, another piece halfway between start and landing. Fairy-chess problems state which version is in play.

What 🩊 means

Yes. Either side may move or capture it. Its hurdle is halfway along a straight path from start to finish; the hurdle is not captured. English rules let pieces on that route block the move; Nonstop rules ignore them.

George Leathem introduced the English form in 1938. Chessics, a fairy-chess magazine, called the Nonstop form Equileaper in July 1976; its origin remained unclear as of 2022.

Why does 🩊 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
