What 🨪 means
It marks a special king piece in variant-chess notation.
Either player may move or capture a neutral piece, according to the variant's rules.
Printers reused metal type by physically turning chess sorts for variant problems and commentary. Chess books and images show turned pieces from the second half of the fifteenth century; that dates the orientation practice, not this exact neutral sign.
