nko letter ma

N’Ko Letter Ma

34/62

ߡ is N’Ko’s letter for the m consonant; “ma” is the chart name, not a whole syllable. It appears in written Manding words, where vowels are written as separate letters. Its outline can change with its position in a cursive word or with the font, while the character stays the same.

Text symbol

What ߡ means

It represents the m consonant; its vowel is written separately.

N’Ko charts call the letter “ma.” That is its name, not the sound “ma”: N’Ko writes vowels as separate letters, so this consonant joins a vowel letter inside a word.

Why was N’Ko made?

For Manding-language education in its own script.

Solomana Kanté developed N’Ko for mother-tongue reading and education, including religious study for learners who did not understand Arabic. Informants place its first appearance in Bingerville on 14 April 1949; that date stands for a longer period of experimentation.

Ajami means African languages written in Arabic script, part of the Muslim educational world Kanté knew. N’Ko grew through literacy and intellectual debate in that setting, but it is a separately devised alphabet, not a branch of Arabic script. The N’Ko movement later supported kángbɛ, a shared literary style intended to bridge Maninka, Bamanan, Jula, and Mandinka in writing despite differences in local pronunciation.

Why can ߡ look joined or go backwards?

The character stays the same; fonts and text direction change its appearance.

N’Ko is written from right to left. If a mixed N’Ko–Latin line is handled as left to right, its parts can be reordered. A blank box or missing outline points to font support: the text may be present even when the font cannot draw the letter.

In cursive words, letters join, and ߡ changes shape depending on whether it stands alone or begins, sits in the middle, or ends a word. Some display fonts keep letters apart; older fonts can place them slightly off the line. Different outlines do not mean different characters.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ߡ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
