ߥ is the N’Ko consonant at the start of “way,” used in Manding-language words. Its joined shape can change with neighboring letters and the font.

What ߥ means

It sounds like the opening consonant in “way.”

Solomana Kanté devised the N’Ko alphabet in 1949 to write Manding languages, including Bamanan, Maninka, Jula, and Mandinka. He had tried Arabic-script writing in 1945 and Latin letters in 1948, but those approaches did not capture the languages’ tone patterns well; he then devised a separate alphabet.

In Latin-based Bamanan spelling, a final w can mark the plural. N’Ko usually writes that marker as a separate word, so adding ߥ to the end of a word is not a reliable match.

What does N’Ko writing tell you?

It identifies N’Ko writing, usually for a Manding language.

After 1949, N’Ko became part of a community literacy movement: people used it for teaching and books, and it came to mark Mande cultural heritage. Its shared written form, Kangbe (“clear language”), lets Bamanan, Maninka, Jula, and Mandinka readers use common spellings even when they pronounce a word differently.

A related West African tradition is Ajami: writing local languages with Arabic letters. Both Ajami and N’Ko run from right to left and join letters, but N’Ko is a separate alphabet designed for Manding sounds.

Why does ߥ change shape in N’Ko text?

Joining changes its drawn shape, not the letter itself.

N’Ko letters usually connect within words, so the form of ߥ can change with its position and neighboring letters. Some display fonts show letters unjoined, especially in headings. These are differences in font and context, not different characters.

Mixed N’Ko and Latin text can appear in the wrong order if the paragraph direction is set incorrectly. A Windows N’Ko keyboard layout documented in 2026 includes shortcuts for changing paragraph direction; set the paragraph’s base direction to right to left when mixing the scripts.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ߥ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
