What ≯ means
The left value is not greater than the right. For ordinary number comparisons, a ≯ b and a ≤ b state the same condition: the left is smaller or equal. Use ≯ to negate > directly.
Unicode encodes ≯ as > plus a combining slash, so it appears as a crossed greater-than sign; font layout controls the slash’s placement. A mathematical work published in 1631 prints >; it was assembled after Thomas Harriot’s death, so this is an early printed use, not proof of an inventor. Historical accounts connect crossed relation signs to Euler but leave open whether he invented them or adopted them.

1Why does ≯ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
