What 𛅴 means
It let women write local speech among themselves.
Nüshu means “women’s writing.” Its slender signs adapt Chinese characters but usually stand for syllables. Jiangyong women with limited access to Chinese literacy used it for letters between pledged sisters, wedding booklets given to brides three days after marriage, life stories, songs, and poems; some writing was embroidered on cloth.
The start is disputed: one study places creation by 1704 at the latest. The earliest known artifact is a bronze coin of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, a Chinese rebel state (1851–64); the earliest documentary mention appears in a 1933 Hunan county survey. Its inscription, “All women under heaven are one family,” carried sisterhood into public life.
