Nüshu Character 1B181

18/396

𛆁 is a Nüshu sign: Nüshu writes the local Jiangyong dialect, and this character records one syllable rather than a whole word. The script carried women’s letters, songs, and personal accounts; today, a lone 𛆁 is more likely a reference to Nüshu or its heritage than a complete message.

Text symbol

What 𛆁 means

It records one syllable in Nüshu, not a complete word.

njyu13 is a Latin-letter spelling used to represent its reading in the Jiangyong dialect; 13 marks the tone, or pitch pattern. It is a reading guide, not a translation. Nüshu writes syllable sounds, and one syllable can correspond to several words that sound alike. The surrounding signs and sentence show which word is meant.

Nüshu developed using forms adapted from Chinese characters, but it is not a one-to-one replacement system. 𛆁 is a syllable sign in its own writing system, not a substitute for one specific Chinese character.

What does 𛆁 mean when someone sends it?

Alone, it points more to Nüshu than to a complete message.

In a Nüshu passage, it is one syllabic part; the surrounding signs supply the word and sentence. Alone, it can serve as a reference to the script or its heritage, or prompt a question about what a larger passage says. Ask what the sender intends instead of assigning it one Chinese or English word.

Why did Nüshu take this form?

It let local women write their speech and lived experience.

Nüshu emerged in Jiangyong County in the nineteenth century. The earliest known artifact is a bronze coin from the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom period, 1851–1864; the coin dates surviving evidence, not the script’s invention.

It served rural women who had limited access to formal Chinese literacy. Women shared letters, autobiographies, songs, riddles, and cloth-bound wedding books given to a bride on the third day after marriage with relatives and sworn sisters, women joined by a chosen sisterhood bond. As Nüshu became endangered, preservation and public heritage work broadened its audience.

A specialist script and heritage reference; in ordinary chat, this single sign needs context.

A lone syllable does not name one Chinese word; its meaning depends on surrounding Nüshu.
