How did women use Nüshu?
Women wrote local speech in poems, letters, and songs.
Women in Jiangyong, Hunan, used Nüshu for local speech; many could not write Chinese characters. Its signs adapt Chinese character forms. Origins are debated; the earliest known artifact is a Taiping Heavenly Kingdom bronze coin (1851–1864), inscribed with a line meaning “all women in the world are one family.”
Traditionally, sworn sisters (women who pledged kinship) exchanged letters; friends gave brides sanzhaoshu, poem books presented three days after marriage. They also sang the texts. Since the 1980s, public preservation added a heritage role.
