What 𛆟 means
Its local reading is tchyn21; context chooses the word.
The Chinese characters 串 (“string together”) and 劝 (“urge”) are its word matches. Nüshu writes local speech in syllables, so surrounding words decide which meaning fits. These characters are meaning clues, not pronunciation guides for 𛆟.
When did Nüshu begin?
Its start date is debated; surviving evidence comes later.
An early historical interpretation places Nüshu’s creation by 1704, based on local records and character forms. One origin legend credits Yuxiu, a local woman sent to the Song emperor’s court; it is a legend, while surviving evidence is later. The earliest known object is a Taiping Heavenly Kingdom coin, from a rebel state in China, minted in 1851–1864; a Hunan county survey mentions Nüshu by 1931.
Nüshu’s slanted forms adapt square Chinese characters and also include newly shaped signs, fitted to write the local speech of Jiangyong.
Why did women use Nüshu?
It let women write local speech where schooling was limited.
Mothers usually taught the script to daughters. Women wrote biographies and letters with women who had pledged a sister-like bond. Historically, brides received “third-day books,” messages from female friends or relatives on the third day after their wedding, with good wishes and advice.
In traditional practice, Nüshu texts were sung or chanted, making writing audible and communal as well as intimate. In 1993, one woman who could not write Nüshu could still recite letters after another woman sang them. Everyday transmission weakened after the 1950s; by 2025, preservation efforts also framed Nüshu as endangered heritage and took its songs to international concerts.
A local writing tradition with private letters and a public, sung life.
By 1993, women still sang Nüshu publicly; calling it a “secret code” misses that shared life.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𛆟 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Nushu block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
